From Jordan, comes this high-quality keffiyeh/shmagh. The tasseling, which is the crafting of the fringe (frills) and tassels is known as “hadab.” It’s done using mainly cotton thread by women in the Salt region in Jordan. It takes approximately 24 hours to complete one keffiyeh. In this keffiyeh, the fringe is less thick than the keffiyeh we have at $47.95.
Keffiyeh, or shmagh, is what we call this square scarf traditionally used as a Middle Eastern headdress. It was – and still is – used to protect people from the sun, dust, and sand. It’s also used as a makeshift water filter. The thin fabric allows it to dry quickly. The pattern is said to represent fishing nets or ears of corn and dates back to ancient Mesopotamia.
