The still was developed in 800 CE by the Muslim alchemist Jabir Ibn Hayyan, name Latinized into Geber, who invented the instrument al-Ambiq, used ever since for distillation. The word “al-Ambiq” is derived from the word that mean, among other things, “that which refines”, that which transmutes” through distillation.
The tradition of making this iconic distillation apparatus has been established in the Iberian peninsula since the rule of the Islamic dynasties of that region. A factory with the same name, al-Ambiq, was established in 1837 CE in Portugal and has been continuously active since.
Al-Ambiq factory makes al-Ambiq and distributes the products through selected distributors around the world. The company holds that all art and skill of working copper was transmitted over three generations that perfected traditional techniques and introduced new models stills so that the factory could follow the current times.

Listing of Indigenous and Native-Owned Businesses is a priority at LEKEF.com. Promoting and encouraging Indigenous economies is not just about correcting a historic wrong, it is also about sound living in the long run.
We receive and review submissions from business owners and their customers. Before we include them under the Indigenous label, the listing must be reviewed and manually approved to make sure, to the best of our abilities, that the business is indeed a local business owned by members of an indigenous community, be it in the Americas, Africa, Australia, or anywhere where indigenous communities have been subjected to eradication and removal.

Hannah Fesseha, who has origins in the Wollo province of Ethiopia, is the Melbourne-based designer behind Tazma Jewelry. She makes custom nameplates and single-initial rings featuring two distinct scripts indigenous to the Wollo region: the official language Amharic, and Ge’ez, the ancient, Biblical language of the Ethiopian church. But Tazma’s standout pieces are one-of-a-kind Wollo opal rings, set in 18 karat yellow gold. All of the pieces are handcrafted in Addis Ababa, and much of the brand’s focus is showcasing the “uniqueness of Ethiopian culture” through fine jewelry.
